In some ways Data is very different because it is new. This is why a Data Office is mission critical. Without common approaches to working with data in an organisation it becomes just too much work for the average person or team to scale data work, the company's information ends up in silos and too many decisions are made without data. For example, if every team had their own approach to finance, you'd have a hugely inefficient business with duplication of effort, no chance of reporting an enterprise profit and loss and you'd struggle to make many decisions based on cost information. We all get that if every area had it's own approach to these topics there would be chaos. Switch data with property/facilities or with IT/technology or with HR/people or with Finance etc. Try re-reading the sentence but substituting the word data with a cross-functional topic you are more familiar with. That might feel like a sentence that is so high level that it says nothing. What is a Data Office for?Ī Data Office is simply the team charged with ensuring that the data within an organisation is best able to support the aims of that organisation. Second, as we're building the Data Office team from scratch I expect to be explaining to a lot of potential applicants why I think this is a great place to advance a career in data and why joining the team at this time should be a huge career opportunity for every single member of the team. As the Data Office is new it makes sense for people to ask what a Data Office is for. There are two questions I expect to answer lot in the next months. I'm humbled to be the first person in this role and excited about the potential for the Data Office to shape data at JLR at this pivotal time in automotive. I'm posting this at the start of my first week as JLR Data Office Director in InDigital.
